Welcome to the blog section of the KOEEDO website, where we delve into important topics surrounding disability inclusion, gender disparities, and the impact of climate change on people with disabilities. In this blog, we will explore the challenges faced by individuals with disabilities, particularly focusing on social exclusion, gender inequality, and the intersection of disability and climate change. Join us as we highlight the efforts of KOEEDO and its partners in promoting inclusion, equality, and resilience for disabled individuals worldwide.
Social Exclusion and Gender Disparities
One crucial aspect of our work at KOEEDO is addressing social exclusion among people with disabilities. We recognize that certain groups, especially women, face additional barriers due to their gender and impairments. Studies indicate that over 70% of people with disabilities in developing countries are women, often due to non-clinical reasons. As primary caregivers, women are more vulnerable to infections leading to sight loss and are less likely to receive necessary medical interventions. Disabled women also encounter discrimination, such as challenges in accessing reproductive health education and antenatal care. KOEEDO actively supports programs that enhance primary health care, improving access for women and children, and empowering disabled women to overcome barriers.
Disability and Access to Basic Health Services
According to the United Nations, an estimated 690 million individuals, approximately 10% of the global population, have disabilities. Access to basic health services is a fundamental right guaranteed under the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. Article 9 of the Convention emphasizes equal access to the physical environment and the elimination of obstacles. Article 28 recognizes the right to an adequate standard of living, including food, clothing, and housing. Additionally, Article 32 emphasizes the importance of inclusive international cooperation and development programs for persons with disabilities. In Kenya, the prevalence of disability is 4.6%, with visual and physical impairments being the most common. KOEEDO is dedicated to improving health services and promoting inclusivity for disabled individuals across all its programs and partnerships.
Education and Children with Disabilities
Children with disabilities face significant challenges in accessing education, with one-third of disabled children currently out of school. Furthermore, disabled individuals constitute 20% of the world's poorest population, often being excluded from mainstream development programs. KOEEDO aims to address this issue by actively seeking support from partners, donors, volunteers, and well-wishers. By providing inputs and promoting equality of opportunity, we work towards reducing poverty and building inclusive education systems. Our commitment is to support 5,000 disabled children over a span of 5 years, while advocating for target countries to develop inclusive education programs.
Climate Change and Disability
The link between climate change and disability is well-established, as disabled individuals are particularly vulnerable to the negative impacts of environmental change. KOEEDO focuses on mitigating this impact by collaborating with Blind and Disabled People's Organizations, ensuring their inclusion in planning, training, and emergency response initiatives. We recognize that there is still much to learn in terms of the impact of climate change on eye health and related disabilities. Therefore, we are actively recruiting a senior researcher to assess the connection between climate change and trachoma, which will inform future programs addressing climate change and public health.
At KOEEDO, our mission is to promote inclusion, equality, and resilience for people with disabilities. By addressing social exclusion, gender disparities, and the impact of climate change, we strive to create a more inclusive world. Through partnerships, donor support, and evidence-based approaches, we aim to enhance access to healthcare, education, and opportunities for disabled individuals. Join us in our journey towards a more inclusive and equitable society, where every person, regardless of their abilities, can thrive and contribute to the betterment of our world.
Thank you for shedding light on the intersectional challenges faced by people with disabilities. It's disheartening to learn about the gender disparities and social exclusion they encounter. KOEEDO's efforts to improve healthcare access and promote inclusivity are commendable. Let's work together to create a more equitable and inclusive world for all.
I appreciate the focus on climate change and disability in this blog. It's important to recognize that disabled individuals are disproportionately affected by environmental changes. KOEEDO's commitment to mitigating the impact through collaboration and research shows their dedication to making a difference. Let's support their efforts and ensure that the voices of disabled people are heard in climate action discussions.
The statistics shared in this blog are eye-opening. The prevalence of disabilities in Kenya and the challenges faced by disabled children in accessing education highlight the urgent need for inclusive development programs. KOEEDO's commitment to supporting disabled children and advocating for inclusive education is inspiring. Let's join hands to create a society where every child, regardless of their abilities, has an equal opportunity to learn and grow.
